SAPHNA Committee member

My nursing journey began in 1993 when I qualified as a Registered General Nurse. I embarked on my career in the dynamic field of Gastroenterology, where I worked until 1999

In 1999, I transitioned to District Nursing on a bank basis. This move was driven by a personal decision to spend more time with my children. District Nursing offered a different perspective on patient care, emphasizing the importance of community health and education.

In 2007, I secured a position as a staff nurse with Walsall School Nursing. The following year, in 2008, I was seconded to complete my Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) degree.  An exciting opportunity arose within our service to undergo training with the Department of Health (DOH) to become a Young Carer Champion. Embracing this role, I dedicated myself to leading initiatives for young carers within school nursing, collaborating closely with the Local Authority (LA). My work focused on ensuring that young carers received the recognition and support they deserved. Despite transitioning to the role of Clinical Team Leader, I continue to champion the cause of young carers at every opportunity, advocating for their needs and well-being.

I was also seconded to work with the newly established Inclusion Team. This role involved using a restorative approach to support children missing education and assisting schools in fostering inclusive environments. This experience further deepened my passion for the critical role we play in supporting the holistic development of children and young people.

I feel privileged to be part of SAPHNA, I am passionate about raising awareness of the significant contributions and innovative practices that school nurses bring to the educational environment every day. Our work is vital in promoting the health and well-being of students, and I am committed to advocating for the profession.
