Children’s nutritional health training

This one day training supports school and public health nurses in working with children and families regarding their nutritional health. It provides clear information and guidance as well as many tools and resources to provide effective interventions.

The training includes:

  • the context of the challenge
  • policy and causes
  • the national child measurement programme
  • accurate measurement
  • classifying BMI
  • assessment
  • motivational interviewing
  • brief advice, brief interventions
  • goal setting
  • NCMP follow up and proactive phone calls
  • working with partners

The training refreshed my knowledge and increased my confidence. It was great to have some hands on practical advice. In the 2 1/2 years I have been a school nurse I have never had such applicable advice.

Evaluation on the SAPHNA training delivered to school and public health nurses showed that 98.9% of nurses completing this course felt confident in using BMI to assess a child’s weight at the end of the training. This compares to 58% pre-training.
